I am the doer / I am not the doer is often a dilemma or a topic of our inner thoughts and conversations on the spiritual path, and especially in the Advaita or non-dual tradition. The question of Choice is often baffling and specifically when it comes to Awakening and Freedom. It is difficult for the sense of I / Mind to hold both the need for “practice”, or better said, the need for Being Here and making Presence the priority, versus the idea of “no effort”, or not needing to make any effort. It can also be challenging to hold the truth of the power and momentum of our Desire for Truth together with the notion – misguided in the moments of suffering – that Awakening is something that happens in the future. What stops us from Awakening fundamentally (and from fully realizing that there is no separation) is a Doubt or a lack of Trust in what we know is True. We still, consciously or subconsciously, rely on or give more energy and attention to the Mind / Past then we give to the Truth of our true Nature. There is the question of the strength of our Devotion and Trust and also of the possible Unworthiness and insecurity, and of the Fear of the Unknown – of the ultimate letting go of the notion that there is a separation and that we are The Doer. In this upcoming 3-week intensive, I am looking forward to growing our reliance on Presence and addressing more individually and directly the doubts, tendencies, and misunderstandings that stop you from Awakening and Freedom.
